Though tea was harvested by the Singpho community of Assam for a long time, the initiative taken by Robert Bruce and Charles Alexander Bruce with a tip from Maniram Dewan, bought it to the forefront of commercialisation in 1823. 

To break the monotony and overcome the cultivation problems, the cultivators initiated to meet and exchange ideas thus clubhouses were initiated. These clubhouses started some recreational activities and Golf was introduced. The second Golf club outside England was started in Assam in the year 1876.
